Lasith Malinga to retire from ODIs

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the retirement of Lasith Malinga from playing ODI Cricket, effective from 26th July, 2019.

Accordingly, Malinga will play his last ODI, when Sri Lanka meets Bangladesh at the RPICS, Colombo on the 26th July, 2019 to play the 01st ODI of the 3 match series.

Lasith Malinga is an exceptional player, who has contributed immensely to the game of Cricket in Sri Lanka. His departure from ODI cricket opens up a door for young bowlers to come and emulate what Malinga has done, while playing for the country,’ said Mr. Shammi Silva, President, Sri Lanka Cricket.

Malinga, who made his ODI debut during the year 2004 playing against the United Arab Emirates has so far captured 335 wickets playing in 225 ODI games.

He is one of the most outstanding players, Sri Lanka has ever produced in its cricketing history. His brilliance has brought many victories to Sri Lanka Cricket,’’ said Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO, Sri Lanka Cricket.

Lasith Malinga, however, has informed Sri Lanka Cricket that he is available for selections to play T20 Internationals for the country.
