Bangladesh beat UAE, Afghanistan stun Pakistan, India down Kuwait

UNDER-19 ASIA CUP IN SRI LANKA

The eight-nation Under-19 Asia Cup hosted by Sri Lanka saw Tanzid Hasan star with a 27-ball 45 in Bangladesh’s 6-wicket win over the UAE at the Free Trade Zone grounds at Katunayake yesterday. Tanzid hit 3 boundaries and 4 sixes in his breezy knock in the rain reduced 45 overs match with Bangladesh replying with 128 for 4 in 21.3 overs to the UAE’s 127 all out in 28 overs.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan routed Pakistan by 85 runs in the tournament opener at P. Saravanamuththu International Cricket Stadium Oval on September 4 while defending champions India romped to an easy 7-wicket triumph over Kuwait at the CCC.

Afghanistan defended 162 for nine by bundling out Pakistan for 78 in 19.4 overs in the rain reduced 46-over match. Seventeen year old leg spinner, Shafiqullah Ghafari  took 3 for 15 and with it the Man of the Match award.
The India versus Kuwait match which was rain reduced to 23 overs saw opening batsman Arjun Azad strike an unbeaten 60 off 58 deliveries inclusive of 5 boundaries and 2 sixes in reply to Kuwait’s 110 for seven.

Regning champions India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are joined by UAE, Nepal and Kuwait in the tournament. The UAE and Kuwait qualified from the western region T20 qualifiers held in UAE while Nepal qualified from the eastern region qualifiers held in Malaysia. Bangladesh hosted the 2018 edition of the tournament.
