Australia outplay Sri Lanka by 134 runs

Sri Lanka Cricket

Australia outplayed Sri Lanka comprehensively by 134 runs with David Warner setting the tempo with an unbeaten 100 in an Australian total of 233 for 2 after Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field in the first of three T20 series at Adelaide yesterday. Australia’s domination was reflected by the fact that the highest individual score was 17 by Dasun Shanaka for Sri Lanka in a dismal total of 99 for 9 in 20 overs with leg-spinner Adam Zampa capturing three for 14. The next best individual score was 16 by Kusal Perera hit 16.

Australia made maximum use of being asked to bat first with David Warner striking a birthday century as he figured in century stands with skipper Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell. Warner’s dominance of the Sri Lankan bowling attack was such that his century came off only 56 balls with four sixes and 10 fours.

It marked a significant comeback for the left-handed opener following a poor Ashes performance against England when he scored just 95 runs in 10 innings in Australia’s Ashes retention. He reached his hundred off the last ball of the innings on his 33rd birthday with half-centuries from Finch and Maxwell, as the Australians ripped into the Sri Lankan bowlers  with Kasun Rajitha’s 0-75 off four overs proving the most expensive figures in a T20 international. Finch struck three sixes and eight fours in his 64 off 36 balls sharing in an opening stand of 122 with Warner. Maxwell made 62 off just 28 balls, studded with three sixes and seven fours in a 107-run stand with Warner.

Australia 233/2 (20 Overs) (D. Warner n.o. 100, A. Finch 64, G. Maxwell 62)

Sri Lanka 99/9 (20 Overs) (D. Shanaka 17, K. Perera 16, A. Zampa 3/14)
