EMERGING TEAMS ASIA CUP 2019

Hosts Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan in the second semi-final by 7 wickets with 61 balls to spare in the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2019 on Thursday at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka to set up the final with Pakistan on Saturday November 23 at the same venue.

Afghanistan, having performed admirably beating favourites Sri Lanka and Oman on the way to the semis, totaled 228 for 9 wickets in 50 overs at a run rate of 4.56 which Bangladesh made light of. No.2, 3 , 4 and 5 Soumya Sarkar (61 off 59 balla, 3×6, 3×4), skipper Naimul Hossain Shanto (59 off 68, 5×4, 1×6), Yasir Ali (38 n.o. off 56, 1×4, 1×6) and Afif Hossain (45 n.o. off 36, 3×4, 2×6) respectively thundered their way in a run spree.

Afghanistan’s bid to make it to the finals ran in to mixed fortunes as No.4 batsman Darwish Rasooli mounted a century in valiant solo effort from the peril of losing the top three batsmen for 24 in 9 overs and on the brink of disaster at 73 for 5 in 21.3 overs. Against such a backdrop, with strike bowler Hasan Mahmud with 3 for 48 and first change Soumya Sarkar 3 for 58 equal to the task, Rasooli’s knock was of tremendous character and composure consuming 128 balls inclusive of 7 sixes and an equal number of boundaries with the only other substantial contributions being from Waheedullah Shafaq 34 and Tariq Stanikzai 33.
