Emerge Prima Trophy champions

It was a tremendous captain’s performance by Daniel in the decisive match for honours in junior cricket’s premier tournament. The Prima Trophy which is sponsored by Prima Company, is considered the cornerstone in the country’s cricket in shaping junior talent to serve Skipper Shevon Daniel emerged the hero in Western Province North winning the coveted Prima Trophy in the Under-15 Inter-Provincial Tournament in the final against North Western Province when he slammed a hurricane knock of 84 off just 49 balls inclusive of 7 sixes and 8 boundaries yesterday at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium. Western Province North won by 69 runs on the Duckworth and Lewis basis in the rain interrupted final with North Western Province, who were set 169 to win off 25 overs on the D/L, making 100 for 6 wickets.
The tournament has in fact served in producing several national cricketers of repute in the past, and this year’s tournament for the 12th successive year took top billing with Sri Lanka Cricket contributing its bit to make the mega tournament a success.
Western Province batting first made 249 with Shevon Daniel leading the way with Chamath Chathurya making 31, Sahan Dabare and Hiran Jayasundera making 27 apiece and Rusiru Vilochana 22. Chathumal Fernando took 3 for 27 for North Western Province.
Main run getters for North Western Province were Gayana Weerasinghe who made 35 and Nethmal de Zoysa 25 while Sajitha Vithanage took 3 for 27 for Western Province.
