Dhananjaya’s century bid stalled by washout of fourth day’s play

Sri Lanka Cricket

Dhananjaya de Silva’s thrust for his sixth Test century was held up following bad overnight weather washing out the entire fourth day’s play of the first Test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Rawalpindi yesterday.

With Sri Lanka on 282 for 6 wickets and still the one inningsof the match to be completed prospects of a result were doomed by the persistent rainy weather that has hovered over the Rawalpindi grounds.

The 28-year old Dhananjaya de Silva is in sight of his sixth Test century in a match which he has solely hogged the limelight with the bravado of high class copybook batting with the right hander having battled out his side of a dire situation of 127 for 4 wickets when he walked out to the middle.  The technically perfect batsman has proved to be a great middle order find for Sri Lanka which has been striving to plug a long brittle middle order in a 3-year career having made his test debut on July 26, 2016 against Australia at home during which period his six centuries has been a testament to his solidness to the team in the batting department.

The loss of yesterday’s play has been a damper to not only the two teams but also the cricket crazy Pakistani home fans who had been eagerly anticipating an absorbing bout of test cricket in the wake of the return of the game to their country that had undergone a 10-year long international boycott following the aborted terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team in 2009.
