AT THE SAG GAMES
Sri Lanka had to be content with two silver medals in cricket at the South Asian Games 2019 with the Lankan men, like their women colleagues, losing to Bangladesh in the Under-23 Cricket Tournament at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground, Kirtipur.
Bangladesh’s win against Sri Lanka in the men’s final followed a substandard batting performance by the Lankans who were dismissed for 122 in 20 overs which the Bangladeshi’s made light of with skipper Najmul Shanto making an unbeaten 35 well supported by Saif Hasan who made 33. Sri Lanka’s top scorer was Shammu Ashan with 25 followed by Pathum Nissanka’s 22 against tidy bowling by Hasan Mahmud who claimed 3 for 20 and Tanvir Islam 2 for 28. However, Pathum Nissanka ended up as the highest scorer in the tournament.
The 7 wicket win gave Bangladesh two gold medals from cricket following their women too beating their Sri Lankan counterparts.
