ICC UNDER-19 CRICKET WORLD CUP
Sri Lanka skipper Nipun Dananjaya’s habit of winning the toss and putting the opposition to bat on a perfect batting strip proved costly with England exploiting it to the maximum amassing 279 for 7 wickets and skittling out the Sri Lankans for 127 runs in just 31 overs in the Plate Trophy final of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2020 at Willowmoore Park, Benoni on Monday.
England had two heroes in opening batsman Dan Mousley who struck 111 off 135 balls inclusive of 9 boundaries and a six, and Lewis Goldsworthy who had the remarkable figures of 5 for 21.
After losing their first wicket that of Sam Young for a duck with the total 1 when he was stumped by Kamil Mishara off Kavindu Nadeeshan, England rallied first through a second wicket alliance of 58 between Mousley and Jordan Cox who made 17 before falling LBW to Sudeera Thilakaratne which brought Jack Haynes with the third wicket partnership realising 142 runs as England took control of the contest reaching 201 for 3 off 38 overs. Haynes made 68 off 78 with 5 boundaries before he was dismissed by Ashan Daniel who had him caught by Thilakaratne. Sri Lanka did round off a quick double strike with the wicket of George Hill two balls later for a duck when Thilakaratne had him caught by Dananjaya. Mosley was fifth out making it 222 for 5 by the second ball of the 44th over. No.6 Joey Evison continued the good work making a quick fire 59 off 45 balls studded with 4 boundaries and 3 sixes.
Sri Lanka’s innings hit trouble with Navod Paranavithana exiting for a duck with the total just 1 run when Balderson had him caught by Qadri . The second wicket pair of Kamil Mishara and Ravindu Rashantha revived the innings adding 41 before Mishara fell leg before wicket to Goldsworthy for 15 and the precipitation set in when skipper Nipun Dananjaya was run out for 4 to a throw by Mosley from which Sri Lanka never recovered with the only worthwhile individual scorer being Rashantha who made 66 off 81 with 9 boundaries and just two more batsmen reaching double figures.
