PLATE CHAMPIONSHIP OF ICC U19 WORLD CUP

By Srian Obeyesekere
Sri Lanka is gearing for their decisive Plate final clash against England in the ICC
Under-19 Cricket World Cup tomorrow February 3 Monday at Willowmoore Park,
Benoni. While England boast of a strong outfit, Sri Lanka will be buoyed by the
fact of having defeated them in the Tri Series final in the West Indies recently.
The Sri Lankans 97-run win over Scotland on the DLS Method in the
Plate semi-final 1 at the North-West University No.1 Ground, Potchefstroom,
on January 30 did bring out an all-round team effort. The form of skipper Nipun
Dananjaya has lifted the side. He struck a fine captain’s knock of 66 off 69 balls inclusive of 3 boundaries and a six in Sri Lanka’s total of 277 for 6 off 50 overs. Ahan Wickramasinghe was equal to the task with a 50-ball 59 hitting 5 boundaries a six, and a 73-ball 54 by opening batsman Navod Paranavithana with
4 hits to the ropes and a six while Kamil Mishara chipped in with 39 off 52 with 5
Boundaries. Wicket takers for Scotland were Jasper Davidson 2 for 31 and Charlie
Peet 2 for 44.
Scotland replied with 149 for 8 off 40 overs on the DLS. The highest individual
score Scotland could muster against the strong Lankan bowlers was skipper
Angus Guy’s 31 off 72 sans a boundary.
