SLC MAJOR TIER ‘A’ TOURNAMENT DAY-2

By Srian Obeyesekere

Going slap bang with the bat was former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews who struck a massive unbeaten 173 for Colts CC as some scintillating cricket was witnessed on the second day of Sri Lanka Cricket’s Major Tier A Tournament taking away the months long boredom from non-cricket activity following the COVID 19 pandemic. Continuing from his overnight 80, Mathews mauled the Saracens SC bowling attack as Colts ran up 408 for 6 declared in the Super Eight match. His 262 ball knock contained 12 boundaries and 2 sixes while he was well assisted by Santhush Gunathilaka who made exactly 100 off 245 deliveries with 3 boundaries.

Also sounding the century board were NCC’s Upul Tharanga who reeled off 122 off 166 balls smashing the Army attack to all parts of the SSC ground together with Lahiru Udara Igalagamage who rattled 105 off 145 balls hammering 12 boundaries and a six. At stumps on the second day of their Super Eight match, NCC were in a commanding position on 323 for 6 having bowled out the Army for 269.The duo shared in a 144-run second wicket alliance.

In the Super Eight match at CCC grounds, Chilaw Marians Kamindu Mendis also feasted with a big hundred clouting an unbeaten 136 off 216 balls decked with 12 boundaries and 2 sixes while Kasun Vidura Adikari made 87 off 114 with 8 boundaries against a hapless BRC. Their efforts saw Chilaw Marians reach 359 for 6 atoning for their mediocre first innings score of 195 having shot out BRC for 87.

Another worthy century maker was Lankan CC captain Chanaka Ruwansiri who led from the front with a fine all-round performance blazing to 124 off 134 balls striking 4 boundaries and 9 big sixes in a first innings total of 270 against Negombo CC. Significantly, he was last out and came back to shine with the ball claiming 2 for 45 in a Negombo CC total of 238. However, Negombo CC bowled themselves into a strong position reducing Lankan CC to 67 for 6 in their second essay. The ray of hope for the Lankans was their skipper Ruwansiri who remained unbeaten on 26 in a contest that was poised for an interesting finish with his side leading by 99 runs and four wickets remaining.
