Heavyweights Contest – CCC and NCC evenly poised

The contest between the two heavyweights table leaders CCC and NCC in the ongoing Super Eight of the Sri Lanka Cricket Major League Tier ‘A’ Tournament had reached an interesting climax at the end of the second day’s play of the third week. NCC extended their overnight score of 341 for 5 to 467 with Chathuranga de Silva, who was unbeaten on 88, going on to complete a superb 159 off 229  balls inclusive of 15 boundaries and a six. Malinda Pushpakumara took 6 for 80. CCC had replied with a formidable 210 for 3 with skipper Kusal Mendis leading the way with an unbeaten 73 off 117 balls hitting 10 boundaries and a six. He put on 74 runs for the fourth wicket with Lasith  Abeyratne who was on 49 off 45 having smashed 4 sixes and 2 boundaries. Abeyratne added 39 for the third wicket with Ashan Priyanjan who made 23 off 47 (1×4). Opening barsman Minod Bhanuka set the tempo striking 33 off 53 (2×4, 1×6) putting on 45 for the first wicket with Ron Chandraguptha who made 19.

Ragama CC, having clobbered 501 for 9 declared, was in total control of their match against the Sri Lanka Army who faced certain defeat trailing by 408 runs having been reduced to 93 for 6 at the CCC Grounds. It set up the Ragama lads for their second successive triumph having humbled the Colts CC last week.

Resuming from an overnight 294 for 5, Ragama CCs Janith Liyanage let the fireworks fly hammering the Army bowlers to the tune of an unbeaten 107 off 227 decorated with 7 boundaries and a six. Others in the run riot were No. 9 batsman Binura Fernando who flayed 62 off 87 (5×6, 3×4) and skipper Amila Aponso 44 off 34 (6×4, 2×6). 

Except for the composed Dinesh Chandimal, the former Sri Lanka captain who made 50 off 82 hitting 3 sixes and 3 boundaries who lacked any support, the rest of the Army batsmen were all at sea against the threesome of Shashika Dulshan who took 3 for 19 and Ishan Jayaratne 2 for 5.

BRC 392 Raminda Wijesuriya 109; Saracens SC 191/5  

Overnight Number 7 batsman Raminda Wijesuriya went on to complete a fine century for the BRC which took their overnight 319 for 6 to 392 all out on the second day against Saracens SC at the FTZ Sports Complex, Katunayake. Wijesuriya, who was unbeaten on 64, on resumption reached 109 off 163 balls inclusive of 13 boundaries and a six.

Saracens SC had replied with 191 for 5 with opening batsman Sithara Gimhan and Gamindu Kanishka Amarasinghe scoring 43 runs apiece. Gimhan’s 75-ball knock contained 6 boundaries while Amarasinghe’s 88-ball innings was filled with 5 boundaries. Ashen Bandara made 31 off inclusive of 4 boundaries.

Chilaw Marians 399/9 Rumesh Buddhika  145 Vs. Colts CC 

Rumesh Buddhika struck 145 off 185 balls studded with 20 boundaries as Chilaw Marians rattled up 399 for 9 at in reply to Colts CC’s 308 at the SSC Grounds at stumps. Other main run getters were Kasun Vidura Adikari 68 off 137 (7×4),  Lasith Croospulle 54 off 50 (8×1, 1×6) and Oshada Fernando 35 off 108 (3×4).

Among the wickets for Colts CC were Dilruwan Perera with 3 for 84 and Nipun Ransika with 2 for 58.
