Sri Lanka Cricket

By Srian Obeyesekere

In a fitting absorbing tempo drum up to the final Day-Night Friday contest of the historic 20-20 Sri Lanka Premier League 2020, Colombo Kings got the better of Dambulla Vikings highlighted by batting fireworks on an equal keel of both sides topping the 200-run mark with the top order firing at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

The intensity was illustrated by Dambulla Vikings scoring 203 for 3 off 20 overs to which the Colombo Kings replied with 205 for 4 winning with 7 balls to spare, in a run orgy triggered by the Vikings top scorer Angelo Perera’s 51-ball unbeaten 74-run scorcher spiced with 7 boundaries and 2 sixes and  wicket-keeper opening batsman Niroshan Dickwella’s 40-ball 65 packed with 9 boundaries and a six after being put into bat. Following a 50-run upfront posting by Dickwella and Samit Patel 26 off 13 (3×4, 1×6) off 4.4 overs, the Vikings overcame a second wicket hiccup of losing Upul Tharanga without addition to the total as Dickwella and Angelo Perera flayed the Colombo Kings attack to the tune of 94-runs between them for the third wickeyt when the former exited to an Angelo Mathews delivery caught by Dushmantha Chameera. The run heat boiled over with the advent of the Dambulla Vikings skipper Dasun Shanaka 28 off 15 (5×4) in an unbroken 59 runs for the fourth wicket as the run rate swelled to 10.5.

That Colombo Kings settled the contest upfront itself with top scorer Laurie Evans who belted 53 off 24 ignited by 4 sixes and 5 boundaries before retiring hurt that was the center piece to the 11.08 faster run rate that took the contest away from the opposition made the ultimate difference to the batting showdown between the two sides. Adding to that victory spurt were the threesome of Qais Ahmad in a bowler turned batsman 22-ball unbeaten 50-run assault heightened by 5 sixes and 2 boundaries, Shan Priyanjan’s unbeaten 28-ball 47 with 4 boundaries and 2 sixes and Thikshila de Silva’s 31 off 16 with 2 sixes and boundaries apiece.

Qais Ahmad’s all-round effort with his 2 wicket haul earned him the Player of the Match award.
