Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) writer Srian Obeyesekere has been conferred a major Silk Sports Award  by Sports Info for Outstanding Contribution to Sports 2020 at the 6th Silk Awards.

The Chairman of Sports Info Silk Sports Awards, Thilan Rangana, who is the Sri Lanka and Nominations Panel Member of Laureus World Sports Awards, Sports Info, the country’s premier organisation that recognises and honours achievements in local sports, in announcing the award to Obeyesekere, has stated, “You have won the hearts of our dear SILK Jury and have proved yourself a worthy winner of the Bernie Wijesekera Silk Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sports. With your confidence, charisma, charm and contribution to sports, you have outshone a number of nominees. Appreciating the greats of the game and those unsung heroes behind the scenes are the main ambition of the SILK Sports Awards.

The concept of organising such an event was raised due to the need of admiring the true contributors of Sri Lanka Sports.

We believe that the significance of an award depends on appreciating the right person or organisation on the right Occasion.”

Obeyesekere is a former sports editor of the ‘Island’ newspaper and deputy sports editor of the ‘Sunday Observer’. He had the distinction of editing the ‘Sports Today’ magazine that was a big hit among sports readers in Sri Lanka. He is also a lyrist who had the distinction of  creating the cricket song after spin legends Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralidaran and Australia’s Shane Warne titled, ‘Spin Kings’ which was sung by former Sunday Observer sports writer, the late Ranjan Anandappa with the melody by popular musician Jagath Wickremesinghe. The song was videoed by Rupavahini and aired during Sri Lanka’s cricket matches. He has penned two more songs on legendary martial artist Bruce Lee and Sri Lankan cricketer Lasith Malinga to be sung by Kalasoori Visharada Prabhath Salgado to be released shortly.
