West Indies 276/5 chase down Sri Lanka’s 274/6 to win by 5 wickets with 9 balls to spare to complete whitewash

Sri Lanka Cricket

The West Indies defeated Sri Lanka in the third and final ODI by 5 wickets with 9 balls to spare, but in what proved to be another ding dong affair as the Lankans recovered from 151 for 6 to 274 for 6 on a gallant unbroken 123-run seventh wicket partnership between Wanindu Hasaranga who rattled 80 off 60 inclusive of 7 boundaries and 3 sixes and newcomer young Ashen Bandara who made 55 off 74 with 3 boundaries and a six at Antigua yesterday.

After being put into bat, Lankan Openers Danushka Gunathilaka 38 off 36 with 6 boundaries, and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne 31 off 46 with a six and boundary put on 68 runs off 13.4 overs, but declined to 151 in 31.5 overs with the next 5 wickets falling for 83 runs when Hasaranga joined Bandara and forged the recovery trail. In the end tall as Sri Lanka’s target was, the West Indies once again powered a forceful reply on the back of Darren Bravo’s 102 off 132 balls hitting 5 fours and 4 sixes as he shared in a third wicket alliance of 109 runs with Sai Hope who made 64 off 72 (3×4, 2×6) after the side had lost 2 wickets for 39 runs off 9 overs when Suranga Lakmal clean bowled Evin Lewis for 13 and Hasaranga and bowled Jason Mohammed for 8. Sri Lanka got two quick wickets that of Hope and Nicholas Pooran for 15 in the space of 21 runs as West Indies were on 169 for 4 off 39.3 overs, but skipper Kieron Pollard produced the type of cameo he is renowned for smashing an unbeaten 53 off 42 with 4 boundaries and a six sharing in an 80-run stand with Bravo as the West Indies reached 249 in the 47.1 overs when Bravo fell whe Jason Holder (10) joined his captain taking the side to victory.
