Sri Lanka 469/6 – Niroshan Dickwella n.o. 64, Ramesh Mendis n.o. 22

Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka ended the second day of the second test match against Bangladesh on 469 for 6 wickets adding a further 178 to the overnight 291 with wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella hogging the limelight with an unbeaten 64 off an equal number of deliveries at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Bangladesh got rid of overnight centurion Lahiru Thrimanne for 140, Oshada Fernando for 81, veteran batsman Angelo Mathews for 5 in a continued poor series run, Dhananjaya de Silva for 2 and Pathum Nissanka for 30. Lending admirable support was Sri Lanka’s 25-year old youth investment Ramesh Mendis who was on 22 displaying perfect test match temperament of holding one end consuming 55 deliveries spaced out in the calm of just the 2 boundaries as the seventh wicket pair figured in an unfinished 87-run alliance with Dickwella having reeled off 7 hits to the ropes.

When play resumed, the overnight pair of Thirimanne and Fernando took the total past the 300 mark, but Bangladesh had early success sending back Thrimanne who had been their bogey man on day one for the addition of 9 runs to his overnight 131 when Taskin Ahmed had him caught behind by Liton Das. His 298-ball marathon knock contained 15 boundaries. Sri Lanka was then 313 for 2, the second wicket pair having put on 104 runs. Next man in Angelo Mathews once again failed to maximise on the sound run harvest lasting 15 deliveries hitting the odd boundary. First test centurion Dhananjaya de Silva lasted 9 deliveries holing out to Shanto off Taijul Islam.

Fernando was sixth out having faced 221 deliveries and hitting 8 boundaries having added 54 for the fifth wicket with Nissanka whose 84-ball knock contained 3 boundaries being bowled by Taskin Ahmed.
