Sri Lanka crush Bangladesh by 209 runs – Jayawickarama 11/178 first bowler in history to take 10-wkt. haul on debut

Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh by 209 runs in the second test with 22-year old left-arm spin prodigy Praveen Jayawickrama claiming 5 for 86 for a record debut match haul of 11 for 178 becoming the first bowler to take a 10-wicket haul on debut since Jason Kreiza in 2008 as the visitors flopped to 227 with Ramesh Mendis chipping in with 4 for 103 in a fantastic showmanship of the host team’s new found left-right spin combination.

It was all over in just over an hour’s play on the fifth and final day when Jayawickrama trapped with Abu Jayed’ leg before wicket having just before got rid of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (38), who had kept them Lankans at bay for over an hour, caught on the leg side trap by Pathum Nissanka to give Sri Lanka a 1-nil series triumph at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium today.

Jayawickrama proved virtually unplayable having started the slide by trapping Liton Das too leg before wicket for 17, his fifth LBW victim.

Ramesh Mendis proved to be the perfect cushion to the all spin attack unleashed by skipper Dimuth Karunaratne hastening Bangladesh’s precipitation going on to account for the wicket of Taskin Ahmed caught by Karunaratne for 7 to add to his tally of 3 the previous day.
