Dhananjaya de Silva 91 in Sri Lanka’s best yet 241/9, but cannot stop England 244/2

Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka came up with their best batting performance on tour scoring a game 241 for 9 wickets off 50 overs at a run rate of 4.82 spearheaded by Dhananjaya de Silva who struck a run a ball 91 and Dasun Shanaka  47 off 67, but could not stop England from an 8-wicket win in yesterday’s Day-Night at The Oval  to take the ODI series 2-nil with one more to go.

England responded with 244 for 2 with skipper Eoin Morgan unbon 75 off 83 showcased by 8 boundaries and a six and Joe Root once again among the runs on 68 off 87 with 5 boundaries after openers Jason Roy 60 off 52 pounding 10 fours and Jonny Bairstow 29 off  36 with 3 fours and a six had put on 76 off 76 deliveries..

Put into bat Sri Lanka started disastrously losing 4 wickets for 21 in 29 balls with skipper Kusal Janith Perera trapped leg before wicket for 0, Pathum Nissanka for 5, Avishka Fernando for 2 and Charith Asalanka for 3 with the first three claimed by Sam Curran.

But Dhananjaya de Silva, who missed the opening fixture through injury, steadied the innings together with Wanindu Hasaranga who took strike at No.6 adding 65 runs off 82 balls for the fifth wicket when the latter was caught by Billings off Curran for 26 off 49 hitting 2 boundaries. It brought Dasun Shanaka to the wicket figuring in a 78-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva for the sixth wicket when Dhananjaya was undone 9 runs short of a well-deserved century by David Willey who had him caught by Joe Root. He hit 13 boundaries in a 150 minute stay. Shanaka found an able ally in Chamika Karunaratne as the pair added 42 off  63 for the seventh wicket before Shanaka became Willey’s third victim caught by Curran. Shanaka hit 2 boundaries and a six in a 60 minute stay.

The Lankan tail wagged with Binura Fernando making 17 off 15 with 3 boundaries and Dushmantha Chameera an unbeaten 14 off 12 hitting a six as the last 4 batsmen accounted for 35 runs off the last five overs. England’s strike bowlers once again did the damage  with Curran right up there with 5 for 48 for his second consecutive Player of the Match award, and David Willey 4 for 64 as they tore through Sri Lanka’s top order. A notable disappointment was Sri Lanka’s freshers Pathum Nissank and  Charith Asalanka  failing to deliver.
