Opening batsman Phil Salt struck a 34-ball 62 to guide Dambulla Giants to their second win defeating Colombo Stars by 18 runs in the sixth match of the Lanka Premier League in the day match played at the R. Premadasa Stadium today. Dambulla, taking first lease on winning the toss, totaled 195 for 6 off 20 overs to which Colombo Stars replied with 177 off 18.5 overs.
Colombo’s bowling attack came apart against Salt’s cameo knock containing 8 boundaries and 2 sixes for his second half century and second Player of the Match award in the tournament. Also game to the task was No.6 Najibullah Zadran who kept up the momentum with 54 off 40 inclusive of 6 boundaries and 2 sixes. He added 31 for the fourth wicket off 30 balls with Salt to up the hundred and went on to bolster the total with a fruitful 77-run alliance for the fifth-wicket with Skipper Dasun Shanaka who was equal to the task with a brisk 25-ball 38 laced with 2 sixes and 3 boundaries.
Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the bowlers for Colombo Stars claiming 3 for 34.
Colombo Stars run chase began positively reaching 71 for 3 off 8.4 overs, but lost their way losing 2 wickets for the addition of 7 runs just past the halfway mark to totter at 78 for 5 after 10.4 overs.
A repair job of 36-runs for the sixth wicket between Dinesh Chandimal 26 off 16 with 2 sixes and fours apiece, and skipper Dhananjaya de Silva 21 off 3 (3×4) took the total to 114 off 13.6 when the skipper fell. A further 23 for the seventh wicket between Chandimal and Keemo Paul who made 11 off 6 with a six and a boundary lifted the side to 137 for 7 after 15.4. Colombo did not give up with Seekuge Prasanna’s 17 off 8 and Dushmantha Chameera’s 15 off 7 rallying it to 163 for 9, but the effort wasn’t good enough to take them through.
Nuwan Pradeep led the way with the ball for Dambulla Giants with 3 for 50 followed by Tharindu Ratnayake 2 for 17, Imran Thahir 2 for 36 and Chamika Karunaratne 2 for 46.
