Skipper Dunith Wellalage led Sri Lanka’s Under-19 World Cup fifth place victory charge against South Africa with a timely 113 off 130 balls in a 65- run demolition at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at Antigua yesterday.
Wellalage struck 9 boudaries and 4 sixes as Sri Lanka totalled 232 for 6 off 50 overs and bowled out South Africa for 167 in 37.3 overs. He was associated in a 130-run fourth wicket partnershp off 139 balls with Ranuda Somaratne who struck an unbeaten 57 off 70 balls studded with 3 boundaries and 2 sixes. The pair came together with the side badly placed on 23 for 3. Shevon Daniel bolstered the innings with a 54-ball 29 hitting 4 boundaries. For South Africa, Wena Maphaka returned figures of 3 for 60 and Mathew Boast 2 for 21.
The South Africans floundered against the Lankans with Raveen de Silva 2 for 14, Shevon Daniel 2 for 28 and Traveen Mathew 2 for 41 the wreckers.
The highest individual score the Proteas could muster was Gerhand Mare’s 44 followed by Ronan Hermann 34 and Andile Simelane 20.
