Dunith Wellalage destroys Australia with 5/28 and 52 in Sri Lanka’s 4-wicket win

Skipper Dunith Wellalage wrecked Australia by a telling all-round show of 5 for 28 and a top score of 52 for a 4-wicket triumph at St. Kills Island, West Indies in the Under-19 World Cup Group D match to head the group with 8 points from two matches. With this win, the Lankans have already qualified for the second round with one more fixture against hosts, the West Indies.

Australia, put into bat, was bowled out for 175 in 50 overs with Sri Lanka responding with 177 for 6 in 37 overs to win with 78 balls to spare. Wellalage’s center piece playmaker display with bat and ball saw the Lankan skipper take his side to within 5 runs from victory when he exited for a 71-ball half century inclusive of 4 boundaries and a six. It was his second 5 wicket haul following his 5 against Scotland in the previous game.

Sri Lanka’s run chase was sustained by a 55-ball 70-run fifth wicket partnership between Wellalage and Anjala Bandara who struck 33 off 42 balls with 2 boundaries followed by 52 for the sixth wicket off 55 between Wellalage and Ranuda Somaratne who was unbeaten on 32 off 35 containing 4 boundaries. Chamindu Wickramasinghe chipped in with a brisk 24 off 19 with 3 to the ropes.

Top scorer for Australia was Campbell Kellaway with 54 off 77 with 5 fours and a six followed by 22 by William Salzman and 21 by Nivethan Rajakrishnan. The other Lankan wicket takers were Treveen Mathew 2 for 32 and Matheesha Pathirana 2 for 34. Joshua Garner 2 for 21 and Tom Whitney 2 for 39 were among the wickets for Australia.
