UNDER-19 WORLD CUP: Sri Lanka defeat Scotland by 40 runs

Sri Lanka launched its Under-19 World Cup campaign on a winning note brushing aside Scotland by 40 runs in a Group D match yesterday at the Everest Club Grounds at Georgetown, Guyana, West Indies.

Sri Lanka totalled 218 in 45.2 overs having won the toss with Sakuna Liyanage leading the charge with a solid run a ball 85 comprising 4 sixes and 3 boundaries. The Scotts were bowled out for 178 in 48.4 overs with Skipper Dumith Wellalage returning fine figures of 5 for 27 off 9 overs.

The Lankan innings was propped up by contributions by Raveen de Silva 30, Chamindu Wickramasinghe 28 and Sadisa Rajapakse 24. Sean Fisher was the pick with the ball for Scotland with 3 for 56 followed by Jack Jarvis 2 for 25 and Oliver Davidson 2 for 44.

Jack Jarvis struck 55 off 61 balls inclusive of 3 sixes and 3 fours, but Scotland was never in the game.

The Lankan bowlers had a tight rein over the Scotts whose next best score was 19 by Tom Mackinson with Shevon Daniel lending his skipper fine support picking 2 for 16. The win gave Sri Lanka 2 points.

In the other Group D match, Australia beat hosts West Indies by 6 wickets at Providence Park.
