Australia swept to a 6-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Friday at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds to take a 4-nil lead in the 5-match series.
Put into bat, Sri Lanka made 139 for 8 in 20 overs which Australia overhauled with consumate ease with eight balls to spare scoring 143 for 4 off 18.4 ouers.
Sri Lanka’s opening batsman Pathum Nissanka struck 46 off 40 balls hitting 4 fours in proving to be the side’s most consistent batsman on tour. It followed scores of 36, 73 and 17 aggregating 172 runs. Kusal Mendis made 27 and Charith Asalanka 22 in breaking a hitherto bad drought in the series but could not convert it to sizable proportions. Danushka Gunathilaka made 17. Jhey Richardson took 2 for 20 and Kane Richardson 2 for 44 for the hosts.
Australia’s victory charge was mounted by Glen Maxwell who made an unbeten 48 off 39 balls inclusive of 3 boundaries.
Josh Inglis added the flourish to the innings with a quickfire 40 off 20 striking 3 boundaries and 2 sixes. Lahiru Kumara took 2 for 22 for the Lankans.
Glenn Maxwell was adjudged the Player of the Match.
