Sri Lanka Cricket

India won the Under-19 Cricket World Cup with comfortable ease against England by 4 wickets in yesterday’s final at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua. Having dominated the game throughout where England, opting to bat first, recovered from 76 for 7 to 189 in 44.5 overs, India strolled to 195 for 6 off 47.4 overs.

The English batsmen were at sea against the bowling of Raj Bawa who took 5 for 37 and Ravi Kumar 4 for 34. England staged a late fight back through James Rew’s 95 off 116 balls inclusive of 12 boundaries sharing in a 93-run eighth wicket partnership with James Sales who made 34 off 65 with 2 sixes and a boundary. George Thomas made 27 off 30 with 4 fours and a six, but their efforts could not stop India’s victory thrust, their fifth world cup in a compatible all-round display with their batsmen equal to the task. It was paced by half tons by Nishad Sindhu and Sheik Rasheed.

Sindhu was unbeaten on 50 off 54 balls with 5 fours and a six while Rasheed made 50 off 84 balls hitting 6 boundaries. Raj Bawa added the flourish to that final spurt with a 54-ball 35 with 2 fours and a six proving to be the centre piece Player of the Match to India’s cup glory by his all-round performance. Harnoor Singh contributed 21 off 46 with 3 boundaries. England’s wicket takers were Joshua Boyden 2 for 24, Thomas Aspinwall 2 for 44 and James Sales 2 for 51.
