Kandy upstage Colombo by 6 wkts; Dambulla defeat Galle by 5 wkts

In high scoring exchanges, Kandy overhauled Colombo by 6 wickets scoring 272 for 4 in 48.5 overs in reply to their opponents 271 all out in 48.3 overs on a day Colombo’s opening batsman, Nuwanindu Fernando’s 112 ton up effort came to naught in the ongoing SLC National League 50-Over Tournament at the Pallekelle International Stadium on Thursday.

Fernando, who struck his second tournament ton in three days inclusive of 7 boundaries and a six in a 133-ball stay, was upstaged by Oshada Fernando’s unbeaten 85 off 94 balls containing 6 boundaries with Sahana Arachchi bringing to play a 74-ball 64 filled with 7 fours in Kandy’s victory thrust. Their 128-run fourth-wicket partnership off 136 balls outshone the 109-run fourth-wicket stand off 129 balls between Nuwanidu Fernando and Sammu Ashan who made 62 off 70 hitting 4 fours and a six.

Also among the runs for Kandy were Lahiru Udara 34 off 54 with 4 fours, Pulina Tharanga 32 off 22 with 4 fours and Kaveen Bandara 25 off 32 with 3 fours and a six.

Other run getters for Colombo were Dimuth Karunaratne 24, Ashen Bandara 20 and Sithara Gimhan 18. The main wicket takers for the winners were Asitha Fernando 3 for 41 and Pulina Tharanga 3 for 66. Meanwhile, Dambulla put behind a bad run by defeating Galle by 5 wickets at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. Dambulla scored 126 for 5 to finish it off in 24.5 overs after bundling out Galle for 125 in 33.4 overs spearheaded by Duvindu Tillekeratne who claimed 4 for 21 and skipper Ashen Priyanjan 2 for 10. Priyanjan topped it scoring 31 hitting 4 fours with Sameera Sandamal and Dushan Hemantha unbeaten on 26 and 28 respectively.
