Roshen Silva rescues Colombo with a brilliant 174

Colombo’s former Sri Lanka batsman Roshen Silva stole the spotlight with a brilliant 174 in a grand rescue act versus Jaffna for an honourable draw in the Sri Lanka Cricket National League 4-Day Tournament match played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium at Sooriyawewa, Hambantota during the week-end.

Roshen, who took strike with Colombo reduced to 5 wickets for 52, figured in a 109-run ninth wicket partnership with Nisansala Tharaka who made 38 in Colombo’s total of 360 in reply to Jaffna’s massive 555.

Jaffna ‘s run spree was led by Saminda Fernando who struck a superb 141 while Navodya Paranavithana made 77 and Dunith Wellalage 74. Colombo’s Prabath Jayasuriya claimed 6 for 109. Jaffna were 217 for 5 in the second innings with Skipper Sadeera Samarawickrama making 96.

Meanwhile, Kandy totalled 482 to which Galle responded with 465 in another high scoring match at the Galle International Stadium. Kandy were 253 for 5 in the second essay. Kandy’s Skipper Kamindu Mendis struck a fine 111 in the first innings with opening batsman Lasith Croospulle leading the way scoring 93 and Lahiru Udara 92 followed by Hasun Vidura 53. Their second innings was dominated by Oshada Fernando who made 122. Mendis made 55 in a fine all-round performance.
