SLC NATIONAL SUPER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:

Kandy emerged champions of the Sri Lanka Cricket mega National Super League Championship by defeating Jaffna in the final on the first innings after the rain hit fourth and final day’s play was called off with just one ball bowled at the Galle International Stadium on Sunday. In what was the showdown in the country’s long version high stakes Rs.5 millon prize money and trophy glitter allure indeed, Kandy came thumbs up.

Having made it to the semi-final on the thin edge of just a solitary first innings win with three of their four tournament fixtures drawn to second placing in the points table, Kandy thrived on their batting machine in making the huge leap to the title as demonstrated by the first innings 444 runs as against Jaffna’s 227 in the decisive final. An equally durable bowling attack in Lasith Embuldeniya, Ashen Daniel and Asitha Fernando showcased a spring in their step to snaring 9 of Jaffna’s wickets to that ultimate hurrah champagne triumph.

That their young skipper Kamindu Mendis, a tremendous recent national under-19 find had much to do in leading from the front as the tournament highest run getter to the Player of the Tournament was high point pay off stuff. As much was one drop batsman Oshada Fernando whose ton-up 109 in the final in a 4-century tournament run earned the Sri Lanka left-hander the Best Batsman award.

Mendis’ brilliant 886 tournament aggregate fetched him 4 tons and an equal number of half tons.

Jaffna earned runners-up prize money of Rs.2.5 millon and trophy.

Meanwhile, Colombo’s Prabath Jayasuriya was adjudged Best Bowler of the Tournament.
