Mathews and Dhananjaya half centuries lift Sri Lanka to 282/5 on rain hit third day

Sri Lanka was on 282 for 5 wickets trailing Bangladesh by 83 runs on a rain affected third day which washed out the post lunch session permitting just 51 overs during which 139 runs was added to the overnight score of 143 for 2 on the third day of the second test at Mai[ur, Dhaka yesterday.

On a day the Lankans lost three wickets including that of skipper Dimuth Karunaratne for 80, the innings was kept on course by veretern batsman Angelo Mathews who was unbeaten on 58 and Dhananjaya de Silva who also made 58. Mathews struck four boundaries and a six while Dhananjaya struck 9 boundaries. De Silva’s 95-ball knock followed a review by Bangladesh after he was initially given not out to a caught behind appeal off Shakib Al Hasan.

The 102-run partnership between Mathews and Dhananjaya’s 102-run lifted Sri Lanka from a shaky 164 for 4 following the wicket of Karunaratne who was bowled by Shakib having added just 10 to his overnight 70. Dinesh Chandimal was unbeaten on 10.
