Sri Lanka Cricket

Cameron Green struck 77 off 109 balls to lift Australia from 157 for 5 to 313 for 8 for a first innings lead of 101 on the second day of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium on Thursday.

Defending a measly total of 212 Sri Lanka’s spinners led by Ramesh Mendis 4 for 107 and Jeffrey Vandersay 2 for 68 and Dhananjaya de Silva 1 for 8 did a good containing job after overnight batsman Usman Khawaja had extended his score of 47 to 71 off 130 balls inclusive of 7 boundaries.

Vandersay accounted for Khawaja caught by Niroshan Dickwella while Dhananjaya de Silva caught and bowled Travis Head for 16 as Australia was reduced to 100 for 4 and 157 for 5 at the fall of Khawaja’s wicket. But Cameron Green and Alex Carey 45 off 47 with 6 boundaries added 84 for the sixth wicket to take the score to 241 when Carey was dismissed by Ramesh Mendis caught by Dinesh Chandimal. Green was trapped leg before wicket by Mendis making it 278 for 7 and when Vandersay caught and bowled Mitchell Starc for 10 Australia was 278 for 8. Skipper Pat Cummins remained unbeaten on 26 off 16 with 3 boundaries with Nathan Lyon on 8. Mendis’ 4 wickets included that of Marcus Labuschagne caught by Asitha Fernando for 13.

CHIEF SCORES: Sri Lanka 212 Australia 328/8 (Cameron Green 77, Usman Khawaja 71, Alex Carey 45, Pat Cummins n.o. 26, Nathan Lyon n.o. 8, Ramesh Mendis 4/107, Jeffrey Vandersay 2/68, Dhananjaya de Silva 1/8).
