Opening batsman Asitha Wanninayake led Sri Lanka’s fight back striking a brilliant unbeaten 132 off 307 balls studded with 19 boundaries in a total of 301 for the loss of 4 wickets in reply to England’s first innings total of 387 on the second day of the four day first Youth Test at Chelmsford yesterday. Sri Lanka, resuming from an overnight 25 for 1 and trailing England by 362 runs, was anchored by Wanninayake who converted his overnight score of 11 to reach the magical three figure mark in a marathon effort.

Despite losing his overnight partner Shevon Daniel for 22 as Sri Lanka suffered a second setback at 50 for 2, Wanninayake stood firm finding solid support from Pawan Pathiraja (32 off 95, 5×4) in a third wicket partnership of 83 from which point he dug into the England attack in stringing 137 for the fourth wicket with Ranuda Somaratne who carved 65 off 114 inclusive of 6 boundaries.

Following the dismissal of Pathiraja with the score 270 for 4, Wanninayake and skipper Raveen de Silva added 31 as Sri Lanka closed the day on 301 for 4 with the latter on 19 off 22 with 2 boundaries.
