A newly built ‘Practice Turf Wicket’ at Gurukula College, which was funded by Sri Lanka Cricket, was declared open recently.
The opening of the ‘Turf Wicket’ will help the Gurukula Cricketers, who compete in the Division 1 School Tournaments, covering all age groups.
This is also going to help the school’s Under-19 cricketers, who compete in the Under-19 Division 1 School Tournament, as the matches of the said tournament are played only on ‘Turf Wickets’.
The Turf Wicket was opened in the presence of College Principal Dr. Kusala Fernando, Mr. Kamal Dharmasiri, Head of the SLC’s National Development Center, and Mr. Chinthaka Edirimanne, Head of the SLC’s National Cricket Operations.
Apart from the above dignitaries, Mr. Anil Mangala Kumara, Master in Charge of Cricket at the School, Mr. Rasika Dilesh, Overall Cricket Coach, Mr. Maurice Dela Zilwa, Schools Cricket Coordinator of Sri Lanka Cricket, and Mr. Kapila Silva, President, Old Boys Association of the School, were present on the occasion.
The ‘Turf Wicket’ was built at the school under the ‘Turf Wicket Construction Program’ of Sri Lanka Cricket, an initiative of President Mr. Shammi Silva, who decided to provide center or practice turf wickets to all schools playing under-19 Division I cricket.
