Pasindu Sooriyabandara hit a career best unbeaten 214 to put Galle in a commanding position on a mammoth total of 658 for 9 declared before reducing Kandy to 62 for 4 at stumps on the second day of the first semi final of the Sri Lanka Cricket National Super League 2023 Tournament at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Sooriyabandara, the 23-year old former Royalist, resuming from an overnight 95, put the Kandy attack to the sword in an all out scoring spree hitting 18 boundaries as the right hander went on to complete his century before advancing to a double ton in clinical fashion. His effort set the tempo for the run riot with Suminda Lakshan joining in the act with a.solid 74 off 97 inclusive of 7 boundaries.
Kavisha Anjula was on song for Galle hammering 59 off 66 inclusive of 5 boundaries and 2 sixes in that 658 for 9 declared, and going on to grab 2 wickets for 13 runs as Kandy lost four quick wickets in hitting the dust 596 runs in arrears with six wickets remaining. Opening batsman Lasith Croospulle remained unbeaten on 29 off 96 containing 3 boundaries as wickets fell around him. Indeed, Kandy will go into the third day looking down the barrel dwarfed by the massive deficit and only a herculean effort by the remaining batsmen will stave off defeat as Galle’s bowlers will look to drive home the advantage to making it to the final.
