Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to seek clarification from the Daily Mirror regarding its report, published on 3 September 2026 and headlined “Sri Lanka Loses Over USD 20 Million as ICC Moves Champions Trophy to India,” written by journalist Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya.

SLC particularly seeks clarification regarding the assertion that Sri Lanka stands to lose over USD 20 million as a result of the tournament not being hosted in Sri Lanka.

SLC requests the Daily Mirror to explain, at the outset, how the figure of over USD 20 million was arrived at, including the methodology, financial assumptions, data and sources used to make this calculation.
It is important that a financial figure of such magnitude, presented as a loss to Sri Lanka, is supported by verifiable facts and clearly established financial data, rather than being based on hypothetical or speculative projections.

Furthermore, based on Sri Lanka Cricket’s experience in hosting previous ICC events, including major men’s and women’s tournaments, the figure quoted by the Daily Mirror appears to be significantly inflated and does not appear to be consistent with the revenues historically generated from ICC events hosted in Sri Lanka.

In the interest of accuracy, transparency and responsible reporting, Sri Lanka Cricket therefore requests the Daily Mirror to publish this ‘Right of Reply’ on its publication and to provide its readers with the methodology, financial assumptions, data and sources used to arrive at the reported figure of over USD 20 million.

SLC believes that providing this information would enable readers to better understand the basis of the reported figure and distinguish between an actual financial loss and a projected or hypothetical economic impact.
