COMMONWEALTH GAMES WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT: New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 45 to make it to semis

Sri Lanka Cricket

New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 45 runs to enter the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games Women’s T20 Tournament in the day-night fixture at Birmingham. Batting first New Zealand Women scored 147 for 7 off 20 overs and restricted Sri Lanka Women to 102 for 8 in 20 overs. The Lankan Women had their opponents whom they have never beaten in the T20 format in trouble at 67 for 5 by the 16th over, but Suzie Bates struck 34 off 32 and skipper Sophie Devine 24 off 23 to put them back on track after Brooke Holliday had made 22 off 23 and Lea Tahuhu 20 upfront.

Sri Lanka was bad hit by the fourth ball dismissal of skipper Chamari Athapattu for a fourth ball duck bowled by Jensen. It took Nilakshi de Silva, who made 31, to revive the innings as wickets fell around as her effort took the side past 100 but the Lankan lasses lacked the fire power to go against the concentrated Kiwi bowling attack that restricted them to 102 for 8.
